Planning a U12 basketball practice requires more than choosing activities for an age group. Some players may need a head start against a defender, while others need greater pressure in the same activity.
The Transforming Basketball U12 template includes shooting exploration, Shield Tag, 1-on-1 finishing and advantage games. Use its activities to address your players’ needs and adjust the constraints as you observe their responses.
The sample begins with pairs changing location after every shot and swapping roles after six attempts. Players vary the arc, stance, release or movement before shooting. The intention is exploration, rather than making every attempt look identical.
Choose locations within the players' usable range. Variation should give them possibilities to explore without making simply reaching the basket the whole task.
One player tries to tag the escaper while a third player acts as a shield. The sample starts inside the three-point line and changes roles when the escaper is tagged or a violation occurs.
An added version gives the escaper a basketball and asks the defender to steal it. Another lets the shield call “go,” after which the escaper has six seconds to score. Treat those as options to introduce when appropriate, rather than rules that must all be present from the start.
For Varied Starts 1-on-1, the offensive player begins from a different starting position on each attempt. The defender initially stays in the restricted arc under the basket—the “smile”—and cannot jump. The offense looks for a finish inside that area.
The sample then offers ways to change the challenge: let the defender start outside the paint and move when the offense begins, or restore the defender's ability to jump. Watch how the offensive player responds to the defender before selecting the next change.
The sample's 3-on-2 bursts keep players in the same roles for one minute, with an eight-second clock. Changing offensive starting locations is an available variation. The aim is to use the numerical advantage rather than repeat one passing pattern.
The final 5-on-5 gives players a wider setting in which to use the session's ideas. The sample includes several optional constraints; select those connected to what you want to see rather than loading all of them into the game at once.
If players struggle to finish against the defender in the restricted area, keep the no-jumping restriction and adjust the offensive starting position. Restore the defender’s ability to jump when players need a different challenge.
During 3-on-2, watch whether the receiver can shoot, drive or pass before the defense recovers. If one defender can guard both off-ball players, use the next stoppage to address their spacing.
The template provides activity options. Choose those that relate to the rate limiter you are addressing, rather than applying every constraint in one practice.
