Coaching Guide

Basketball Coach Development

Basketball coach development should address the decisions you make on court. You may know how to explain a small-sided game but struggle to recognize when the defensive pressure needs adjusting. You may identify a missed opportunity but stop play so often that players have little time to explore it.

Choose one part of your coaching to work on. Use a recording or another coach’s observations to examine what you do and how players respond.

Review One Coaching Decision

Select a short passage of practice in which you changed an activity. Record what players were doing, the constraint you changed and what happened next.

For example, an offensive player may lose the ball immediately against a fully live defender. Constraining the defender to dribbling a ball gives the offense more time to recognize space. Watch whether your adjustment creates an appropriate challenge or makes the activity too easy.

Use that example to plan your next intervention. The review should help you decide when to change a constraint and when to give players another opportunity under the same conditions.

Ask for Specific Feedback

Give an observing coach a clear focus. You could ask them to record how long your explanations last, when you interrupt play or what happens after you adjust a constraint.

If you need help introducing an activity, ask for a demonstration and an opportunity to practice the explanation. If you are unsure why an activity is not working, review the players’ responses together.

Develop Staff Through Their Actual Coaching

Agree on one development priority with each coach. Observe a practice, discuss a specific example and identify something to try in the next session.

For example, a coach working on feedback could practice identifying what the ball-handler needs to notice about the help defender. Review whether the feedback helps the player recognize an available pass when play resumes.

Start With a Change You Can Examine

You do not have to replace an entire practice approach at once. Modify a familiar activity by adding a meaningful defender or varying the start. Observe what changes for the players and what the new task asks of you as a coach.
