Inside the book

About the book

Basketball keeps changing. Many coaching habits have stayed the same. Transforming Basketball examines those habits through the science of skill acquisition and asks what coaches can do differently.

Alex Sarama explains ecological dynamics and the constraints-led approach through basketball examples, illustrations, case studies and contributions from other practitioners. Reflective tasks and linked video resources help you connect the research to your own coaching.

The problem

If your players look great in practice, but struggle when the game gets real, this book will help.

  • Your practices are highly controlled, but the game is anything but.

  • You’re preparing players to repeat movements, instead of solving problems.

  • You’re using generic drills, but not addressing the rate limiters unique to each player.

  • You’re teaching techniques, but players aren’t always learning when and how to use them.

  • Your players can repeat the drill, but struggle to find solutions when the game changes.

Transforming Basketball offers a different approach, using representative learning environments, constraints, and rate limiters to develop more adaptable players.

Inside you'll find how to

Practical frameworks for the whole organization

  • Identify rate limiters and manipulate task constraints with intention

  • Build a unified, evidence-based development approach for your whole organization

  • Apply a constraints-led framework across coaching, athletic performance, and front-office roles

  • Move beyond outdated drills and one-size-fits-all playbooks

  • Design small-sided games that build “repetition without repetition”
