Basketball Warm-Up Games: Start Practice with Play

Basketball warm-up games can introduce changes of direction, passing, ball protection and interactions with other players. A tag game gives a player an opponent to evade, while a passing game requires them to find a receiver around a defender.

Choose activities your group can begin quickly. Change the space, equipment or defensive restrictions as players become ready for a different challenge.

Start With a Clear Task

Give players a task such as protecting the ball or completing a pass past a defender. Explain the playing area, how the game begins and when roles change.

Use small groups so players can stay involved. If the activity becomes predictable, change one condition and observe the response. A smaller area gives an escaping player less space; a defender who must also dribble applies a different level of pressure.

Touch Football and Tag

Play touch football with different types of ball, then explore tag games. In this example, the ball changes every 30 seconds and the session moves into activities including chain tag.

Wrestling and Battling Games

Partner battles give players a different movement problem to explore. Use the activity demonstrated in the video as a starting point, with clear contact rules and pairings appropriate for your group.

Explore With PVC Pipes

Equipment can change the movement possibilities in a warm-up. Players interact with PVC pipes in different ways, with opportunities to create their own activities.

Use Constraints to Adjust the Challenge

Choose a change that responds to what is happening in front of you. These are starting points to try, rather than a fixed progression for every team.

Turn a Passing Drill Into a Game

A familiar line-passing activity can become an opportunity to read a defender.

Connect the Warm-Up to the Rest of Practice

A warm-up can introduce a situation you will develop later in practice. If the focus is passing under pressure, use the three-player passing game before adding more receivers and defenders in keepaway.

Tag and partner games can also provide different movement challenges without reproducing a basketball possession. Choose them for the task they give players, then move into basketball activities suited to the day’s priorities.

Observe how players respond before increasing the challenge. Adjust the space, pace or pairing for players who need different conditions.
