U14 Basketball Practice Plan

The Transforming Basketball U14 practice plan connects finishing, shot selection and small-team offense. Players experience a recovering defender in Around the Arc, a shoot-or-pass decision in 2-on-1 and an opportunity to create dominoes through a get in 3-on-3.

Use these activities to identify where your players need support. They may recognize an advantage but struggle to convert it, or run a trigger without using an appropriate coverage solution.

Begin With Movement Variation

The sample starts with different finishing takeoffs, changing stances before shooting, and varying dribble speed and height. Players also change shooting location. This gives them scope to explore several movement solutions before the live games.

Around the Arc: Let the Start Create the Advantage

The offense and defense begin in the deep corner. The offensive player moves around the arc while the defender follows. When the offense steps inside the arc, the 1-on-1 becomes live and the offense tries to finish at the rim.

The sample offers a three-second clock after entering the arc, a closer defensive start and points for defensive stops. Each changes the challenge. Choose a condition based on whether the offense needs more opportunity or the defense needs more freedom.

2-on-1 Shooting: Find the ROB Shot

ROB means range, open and balanced. Two offensive players can pass or shoot while a defender passes the ball in and then tries to intercept or contest. The offense has a maximum of two passes.

The initial restriction removes drives and cuts, keeping attention on the shot and extra pass. The sample offers cutting, then fuller movement options, as possible additions. Those are changes to the task, not requirements to rush through a progression.

Watch the opportunity available at the catch. Is the receiver within range and open, or does the defender make the teammate a better option?

Use Gets in 3-on-3

A get brings a pass and a handoff interaction together to create an advantage. The sample uses this trigger within 3-on-3, so the two-player action sits alongside another teammate and their defender.

The intention is to create a useful scoring opportunity from the interaction. A player should not ignore an opening simply to finish the action in a predetermined way.

Identify What Needs More Practice

In Around the Arc, observe whether the offensive player uses the head start or allows the defender to recover. In 2-on-1 shooting, watch whether the receiver recognizes when a teammate has the better shot. In 3-on-3, observe whether the get creates dominoes.

Choose the next constraint from those observations. A closer defensive start can increase the challenge in 1-on-1. Keeping one defensive coverage consistent in the trigger game gives players more opportunities to explore a particular solution.

Return to these situations in later practices and games. Use the template’s full activity and scoring options to adjust the challenge for your group.
